The Thespian meets Miss Teenage Socialite

My good friend, Miss Teenage Socialite a.k.a. Kyla Emman, was nice enough to interview me as I was to interview her! Check out her blog to see what she asked me. In this interview, this NYC Socialite talks about fashion and the place she calls home.

How did you first get into fashion?

I first got into fashion when I was a little girl and my mother bought me these cute little fur coats with the matching hat and glove set. That’s when I started putting outfits together. They looked more like clown costumes then anything else, but I really learned what personal style was. As for being in the fashion industry, I started when I was 16 as I began my blog, Miss Teenage Socialite NYC, while I was traveling to Japan and China. I started to meet people and get invited to parties and places I had only seen in movies. I'd receive random invites to fashion shows. It was weird but awesome.

What are your plans for college?

My plans for college are to study in state at a University with a great broadcasting/communications program. I really want to become a fashion correspondent or a host of a show. But by no means am I the kind of girl who’d go to an Ivy League or as Blair calls it “the holy trinity”. I just want to go to the school that can push me, let me work and make me happy. I think that internships are really important to have in a media field and the schools that I’m applying to are very internship oriented.

What is the most fashionable city you've ever been to?

I'd have to say Tokyo, Japan. They have so many crazy, amazing stores there and the street fashion there is so bold. I love the sense of self confidence you feel when you're there. The teens there exude pride in even there most ridiculous outfits, which rubs off on you. Tokyo is all about dressing yourself as you want to be seen and not caring what people think of it. Everyone there looks like they are straight out of a comic book or “Manga”. Also, the stores are great because you can pick up anything there! In America, there is always one sort of dominant trend/look. In Japan, anything goes so their shopping is a plethora of different trends.

Since meeting you at FIT, have you taken any other fashion courses?

No I haven’t. I’ve been really busy working on original content for my blog, balancing school, starting a new business and launching my headband collection. Right after we met at FIT, I was asked to become an intern for Alloy Media and Marketing, the company that deals with shows like "Gossip Girl", books like "The Clique" novels and movies like "Sister Hood of the Traveling Pants". So between then and now, I really don’t have time to do anything else!

What part of NYC is your favorite to shop in?

I love shopping anywhere really, but I think that Chelsea is home of the best thrift shops ever and small trinket stores in NYC. I’m all about being original and thrifty so that’s my go to place for vintage designer stuff. I also like Hell's Kitchen because it’s so close to my house. They have flea markets every weekend. Dominick’s Thrift Shop on W. 47th is my new fave in HK, they have some great stuff.

Who is the most influential fashion icon or designer you have ever met?

The most influential fashion icons I have ever met were Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. I met them when I was really small, I must have been around five years old. They weren’t big fashionistas then, but then again fashion in the 90’s was just tacky. Now they are just amazing trend setters, their style is really eclectic. The most iconic designer I have ever seen was DVF. She was the key note speaker at Teen Vogue’s Fashion University. I didn’t get to chat with her on a personal level that day but it was mind blowing to hear her story from her own lips.

Thank you so much Kyla!
